Everyone at Wells Marble would like to express immense gratitude to our own Philip A. Gunn, Mississippi Speaker of the House and Wells Marble attorney, for his leadership in helping pass the recent bill to remove the Mississippi state flag.
On June 22, 2015, Speaker Gunn became the first state-level-official to call for a change in the Mississippi flag, the last remaining flag displaying the controversial Confederate battle emblem. Five years later and in his third term as the House’s presiding officer, the flag was removed after lawmakers, overwhelmingly, passed the historic legislation.
As Speaker of the House, Gunn was able to have a direct impact on the law by leading the charge to change the flag. He was not driven by political agenda, but rather, by doing what was right. With help from both Republicans and Democrats, the required two-thirds majority was reached, making the change a truly bipartisan effort.
